Costa
Rica
We chose Costa Rica as the
location for our tree farms because it has had a stable democracy for more than 100 years,
and its constitution and laws guarantee private property rights for both Costa Ricans and
non-Costa Ricans alike
Costa Rica also has a prospering economy
with modern services. And, we now have more than 30 years' experience in owning
farms and doing business here.
This peaceful,
free, and democratic
little country abolished its army decades ago, preferring to apply its resources to the
education of its children. Costa Rica has one of the highest literacy rates in the world.
Costa Rica is located within the
narrow band of humid tropics where tropical hardwood species flourish, and yet it is near
the United States.
With sea ports on both the Atlantic and Pacific
coasts (see the Maps page), Costa Rica has good shipping access to
the markets of both Europe and Japan, as well as all of North America.
We also chose Costa Rica
because of its rich, abundant biological diversity. This little country, about the size of
West Virginia, is so lush that it is home to thousands of species of
flowers, more than 2,000 species of trees, 850 species
of birds (more than all of the United States and Canada combined), and more kinds of
butterflies than the entire continent of Africa. Costa Rica has twelve different types of
biological life zones.
In this lush tropical climate,
plants and trees flourish. Costa Ricans boast that "here even the fence posts
grow." Because of this tropical richness, many of the world's most valuable tropical
hardwood species thrive in Costa Rica.
In addition to being blessed with a
wonderful climate and growing conditions, and having a stable, modern democracy, with laws
conducive to business and investment, Costa Rica's real treasure is its wonderful people.
